Growing up, The Babysitter’s Club by Ann M. Martin was more than a series of books to me. It was a lesson in women’s entrepreneurship. In the seventh grade, I wrote BABYSITTER AVAILABLE with my first name and phone number on colorful pieces of paper and wrapped them around Halloween candy. I passed these out in the trick-or-treat bags of young children while waving to their parents who waited on the sidewalk. After that Halloween, I was the most sought-after sitter on the block.
At 13, I danced at the Apollo Theater with Savion Glover. Gregory Hines (tap idol!) watched our group rehearse from the wings. As we walked off stage, Mr. Hines greeted each young dancer with love and humility. He was the first celebrity I ever met, and to this day, I remember him as the kindest. (If you want to know my least favorite celebrity, you’ll have to ask during our interview.)
I’m an Old Mom. It means I became a mother after 40. And before anyone gets offended, I stole this affectionate term from a guest on my favorite podcast, Forever 35. More on my #momlife: My toddler listens to my music (which is now our music) on our daily commute. It’s the only way to combat Baby Shark.
